Manhattan Neighborhoods Explained Part 2: Midtown Manhattan

October 18,2022 | By Centennial Properties

Welcome to part two of our series highlighting all of the wonderful and diverse neighborhoods in Manhattan!

In part one, which you can read here, we covered some of the neighborhoods located in Upper Manhattan: the Upper East Side, the Upper West Side, and Harlem. Each one of these neighborhoods have distinct features that make them unique even from one another. But Manhattan is so vast so we will continue onto another part of Manhattan: Midtown Manhattan.

In this blog, we'll highlight some of the best neighborhoods Midtown Manhattan has to offer New York City residents and visitors, including Chelsea, Hell's Kitchen, Murray Hill, and the Garment District. Keep reading to learn more about each area!

Chelsea

Ever wondered how Chelsea got its name? It was inspired by a retired British Major, named Thomas Clarke, who named his Federal-style home after the manor of Chelsea in London. While Chelsea may not be revered as being one of the most popular Manhattan neighborhoods, it's an exciting, bold, edgy, and artistic area that deserves more acclaim.

First of all, it's home to over 400 art galleries. Agora Gallery and Petzel Gallery are two of the most prominent, but there are also a number of small-scale venues that highlight Manhattan's local artists. Additionally, Chelsea is one of NYC's top LGBTQIA+-friendly areas. There are a ton of gay bars and hangouts, but there are also so many other bars and restaurants that make Chelsea a notable nightlife spot. Hell's Kitchen

Hell's Kitchen is located near Times Square, which means you'll see a lot of tourists and visitors browsing all of the popular tourist spots. If you're considering moving to Manhattan, this is just something to keep in mind.

Hell's Kitchen attracts a very young crowd because there are an endless number of places to grab food, drink, party, and make friends. It doesn't only have a notable nightlife and social scene, however. It also has a thriving theater community as well.

Murray Hill

Murray Hill is one of Manhattan's most underrated neighborhoods. It's a great place for young professionals looking to start their careers in New York — companies like the United Nations and Microsoft are headquartered here after all.

Murray Hill is a very affordable area. Despite being a little on the outskirts, it's near some of Manhattan's most popular places, like the Empire State Building, Times Square, and Koreatown. Interested in checking out some of our listings in Murray Hill? Click here!

The Garment District

If you keep your finger on the pulse of fashion, you likely already know about the Garment District. Despite being smaller in size, the Garment District is a busy area! There are over 6,000 businesses and fashion retailers located in the neighborhood — although that's about the extent of the list of things to do here. It's not a highly residential area, and property prices are pretty high, so it might not be the ideal spot for everyone.

These are just a few of the neighborhoods in Midtown Manhattan, so be sure to do some more research! In the last blog in this series, we'll cover some of the best spots in Lower Manhattan.
